Consultation

Initial consultation includes:

  • Collection of complete medical history while interacting with the child and family to observe for any social communication disorders that may initially stand out.
  • A detailed oral motor evaluation is then used to help identify speech motor abilities, including strength and muscle coordination. This information is informative to determine the possibility of underlying disorders.
  • An assessment of speech and language skills, auditory processing skills, pragmatic skills, fluency, or swallowing pattern, depending on the area of concern, is administered to identify possible causes or diagnosis.
  • A written consultation report is provided given that it is determined the child does not need any further evaluation
  • Prior to the consultation, a brief (15-20 minute) phone or email conversation is offered to parents free of charge to help families decide if their child is in need of speech, language, or communication therapy.

Evaluations

After an initial consultation it may be recommended that your child return for a full comprehensive evaluation. This includes a combination of structured/standardized testing and clinical observations to assess speech and language strengths and weaknesses. Based on your child's needs testing may include assessment of articulation skills, expressive and receptive language testing, assessment of word finding, language processing, critical thinking skills, written language abilities, social language skills, fluency skills, etc. Assessment duration will vary based on your child's needs. Additional information is obtained from caregivers and teachers via questionnaire or an interview.

Re-evaluations are also provided to measure progress, create new targets, or determine the possibility of discharge and future steps. All evaluations include a full comprehensive written report.

Therapy

Each session includes direct one on one time with the child. Therapy focuses on specific skills that work towards that client’s goals. Time is also dedicated at the end of each session to review observations, progress, and recommendations for the caregiver. For adults, we work with the adult client to tailor goals to meet their unique needs in the workplace, home, and/ or community.  Treatment focuses on predetermined areas of weakness identified through an initial consultation or evaluation. We are trained in a variety of methods to address the speech goals. Both in-person and virtual services are provided.
